Central Asia Institute
CAI Overview - Our Involvement - Aide Locations

Central Asia Institute - to promote and provide community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Central Asia.

"Thanks to Mountain to Mountain, a whole community came together to offer their support to another mountain community half-a-world away. This was a unique effort in the history of our organization, and the willingness of the greater Breckenridge, Colo. community to support this effort is bringing a profound change to a village devastated by the October 2005 earthquake in Pakistan," said Greg Mortenson, founder of CAI and author of New York Times bestselling book, Three Cups of Tea. "The rural Nowaseri school in Neelam Valley is being built because local communities cared enough to help, and will educate generations of children to come. The education of the children from Nowaseri gives hope for a brighter future, brings kinship with local communities here at home, and builds bridges of peace. The Mountain to Mountain community’s affirmation of peace through education humbles me, and the only way to really say thank you is to keep building schools!"

Overview

Central Asia Institute Mission Statement:
To promote and provide community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of Central Asia.

Central Asia Institute community projects are in remote mountain villages of northern Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kyrgyzstan, and the steppes of Mongolia.

Each one of the CAI's projects is locally initiated and involves community participation. A committee of elders guides each selected project. Before a project starts, the community matches project funds with equal amounts of local resources and labor. This commitment ensures a project's viability and long term success. Local NGO's (Non-Government Organizations) and village communities are selected for their dedication, initiative, and accountability to facilitate our community partnerships. We take great care to cooperate with the various governmental, political, and religious groups of this complex region. We meet this cross-cultural challenge without affiliation to any particular group.

CAI is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization which provides community-based education and literacy programs, especially for girls, in remote mountain regions of central Asia.

As of 2006, CAI has built 58 schools, serving more than 14,000 students. To learn more please visit their website at www.ikat.org
